Thinking about the aquarium? Avoid these initial errors

You like the idea to "steal" a piece of lake or sea, to have it alone for yourself, in your room? Perfect! The landscape will be incredible! But only if you take responsible responsibility for the new and unknown pathway of the aquarist and carefully follow the instructions. Do not make the starting mistake and quickly experience failure.

Smaller aquarium - bigger challenge!
Many beginners think it's better to start with a small aquarium (20-30 liters), so after gaining some experience, get bigger. Error! Why? Smaller aquarium is becoming more polluted, due to feeding and metabolic activity of fish. A small amount of water means that key water parameters change very quickly, and this leaves no room for error. Given that the chances are flat at zero for the beginner to make no mistake, there is a problem in the announcement. The optimal initial aquarium litter should be about 50 liters.

Pre-packing fish
You will pay the price for impatience. You installed the aquarium, pour water, put in fish and what happens - they die. And you are very disappointed. What went wrong? Ph value of water has not yet stabilized. Aquarium water must be allowed to stand for at least 24 hours before inserting the fish into it so that chlorine, carbon dioxide and other harmful substances evaporate, and ph water value has increased and stabilized. You can also get products that will neutralize heavy metals and other destructive chemicals.

Too much fish at once
Aquarium is a closed system and sensitive to sudden changes. When you put a lot of fish at once, the system is literally shocking. The unauthorized amounts of ammonia and other substances resulting from the process of food decomposition and metabolic processes will cause premature deaths of your fish, as there is still not enough bacteria in the filter to process that water. It is best to get a pair of durable and inexpensive fish that will begin the process of cycling the aquarium. After that, gradually insert new ones.

Incompatible species
The worst you can do is go into the store and say, "Wow, what are these beautiful! You will give me one red, one green and one orange! "Aquarium fish must agree with one another, otherwise they will kill each other and eat. Also, different types require different living conditions. It is recommended that the fish be from one family.

Too much food
Fishes are constantly looking for food. Although it will seem to you that the hungry do not stop, it does not mean that you need to keep them safe. Initially, feed the fish once a day. When you notice that the level of ammonia and nitrate is high, do not feed the food for a day or two in order to clear the water. Without fear, the fish can eat without food for several days and nothing will be bad for them.

Poor filtering of water
The filter is a small laboratory inhabited by useful bacteria that use chemical compounds in water for their lives, which otherwise damage the fish. If it is too small, it will not be able to purify all the water, which can be very harmful to the fish. Optimal filter size is the one that allows all water from the aquarium to pass through the filtration process three times in one hour.

Irregular water change
What do we actually achieve by replacing water? As we have said, the aquarium is a closed system in which water does not circulate as in nature, and we must artificially simulate it by replacing old water with a new one. In this way, we refresh the aquarium and keep parameters such as ammonia, nitrate and nitrite at a low level. Water change is done once a week. In addition, it is important to note that it is not necessary to remove all water, but only a third. Irregular water replacement exposes fish to stress and circumstances favorable for the development of the disease.

Discus are members of the Family Cichlidae and are sometimes referred to as “King of the Aquarium” because of their majestic beauty and regal colors.  At least three species have been described, although debate continues over the validity of several assigned scientific names.  Wild caught discus can be challenging to keep, due to their specialized water chemistry and dietary needs, however, most discus sold today are captive bred and are much easier to keep.  That said, they are not for beginners, for a variety of reasons.  Through selective breeding, numerous color varieties are available and more continue to be developed.
